About Red

Hello! My name is Red, and I’m a stunning African Grey parrot

At around 30 years old, I’m just entering my prime! While they say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, that certainly doesn’t apply to me. I adore learning new things and exploring new places. I’m one of the cleverest parrots you’ll ever meet – I can even unscrew nuts and bolts with my tongue! When I first arrived at my safehouse, I was afraid of toys because I didn’t know what they were. Now, I love them and can entertain myself for hours, especially with my favourite toy, the babble ball that makes noises (I’ll be bringing this with me – you’ve been warned).

I love to dance whenever I hear singing, whistling, or any kind of music. It’s even more fun when people join in! I spread my wings, bob up and down, and sing along.  I love to whistle and can mimic the Addams Family theme, the McDonald’s jingle, and even a police siren. I’m a bit shy about talking around people at first, but once they leave the room, I chatter away and quickly add new sounds to my repertoire. Occasionally, I might slip in a swear word, though I’ve been curbing that habit.

I’m wary of stepping onto hands – I just won’t do it. However, I hold my safehouse dad’s finger, so with a bit more time and patience, I believe I can master this. When out of my cage, I usually stay on top of it, observing everything. But if there’s a way to climb down or explore, I will! Keep an eye on me – I’m an explorer! Once, I got scared and flew across the room, landing with a bump. So, I can fly if needed, but I prefer climbing or walking.

In my current home, I’m very affectionate with my male safehouse dad, enjoying time on his shoulder or chest while he tickles my neck. I’m less fond of my safehouse mum, but have happily lived with both men and women in the past, as well as teenagers. However, I’m not comfortable around young children and would best suit a quiet household.

For 30 years, I was an only parrot. While I enjoy communicating with the other parrots in my safehouse, I prefer not to be let out at the same time as them, as I tend to look fierce and chase them. I’m okay with dogs and cats as long as they keep a safe distance.

When I arrived at my safehouse, I was on a seed-only diet. Now, I enjoy Harrison’s pellets, which are much healthier. I like to dunk them in my water bowl like a biscuit! So, I must stay on Harrison’s pellets in my new home too. Fruits and vegetables are hit or miss with me – some days I eat them, other days I throw them on the floor, but it’s all in good fun.

My safehouse people think I’m an exceptionally sweet, funny, gentle, and beautiful girl. Someone will be very lucky to have me. If you think I could be the bird for you, please apply. You won’t regret it. All I ask for is lots of loving praise and patience.
